Automating content refreshing means letting software spot pages that are losing traffic, work out what changed in the search results, and suggest how to update them. You decide which pages to fix and how.
The short version: For established sites, automated refreshing often does more good than publishing brand-new pages.
Your best-performing guide from two years ago still gets praised in meetings. Nobody has noticed it's lost a third of its clicks since spring, because a competitor published a newer version. This is content decay, and it happens quietly to almost every site.
What content refreshing involves
Refreshing content means finding pages that are slipping, figuring out why (outdated facts, a better competitor page, a change in what Google shows), updating the page, and checking whether it recovers.
What software can take off your plate
- Comparing each page's clicks this month with last month, and flagging big drops
- Listing the searches each page is losing
- Comparing your page with what's ranking now and noting what's missing
- Spotting outdated years, prices, or screenshots
- Tracking whether refreshed pages recover
What to keep in human hands
- Choosing which pages are worth refreshing, based on business value
- Deciding whether to update, merge, or retire a page
- Writing the actual updates, or at least editing them properly
A simple first automation
A Monday decay list, the same one Priya uses:
- Every Monday, pull clicks per page from Search Console for the last 28 days and the 28 days before.
- Keep pages with at least 100 clicks that lost more than 20%.
- For each one, list the searches that lost the most clicks.
- An AI step compares the page with today's top results and suggests what to add.
- The list lands in Slack, and you pick which pages to refresh this week.
Common mistakes
- Only changing the date on a page without improving it
- Refreshing pages that lost traffic for seasonal reasons
- Not tracking results, so you never learn which kinds of update work
Where it sits in the loop
Refreshing covers the whole loop in miniature: Discover the drop, Research what changed, Optimize the page, then Measure and Learn. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.
How much control to give it
Detection can be fully automated. Keep the updates themselves on Draft or Execute with approval. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
