This is the plain-English glossary for SEO automation. Each page takes one buzzword, explains what it actually means, and shows how it differs from the terms it gets mixed up with.

If you've sat in a meeting where someone used "AI SEO", "agentic SEO" and "autonomous SEO" in the same breath, as if they meant the same thing, you're in the right place. They overlap, but they aren't the same. The differences matter when you're deciding what to build, buy, or say no to.

Start here if you're new

You don't have to read these in order. But if you're starting from scratch, this path works well:

  1. What is SEO automation?: the big umbrella, also called automated SEO. Any SEO work that software does for you.
  2. SEO workflows: how single tasks get chained together, step by step.
  3. AI SEO: where AI models come in, and where they go wrong.
  4. SEO Agents and Agentic SEO: AI that picks its own steps toward a goal.
  5. Autonomous SEO: systems that keep running the whole cycle on their own.

How the work gets done

  • AI SEO: AI models help you research, analyze, write, or decide what to do next.
  • Agentic SEO: you give an AI a goal, and it works out which steps and tools it needs.
  • Autonomous SEO: a system that keeps watching, acting, and checking results over time, inside limits you set.
  • SEO Agents: the AI "assistant" itself. A goal plus tools, data, and permissions.
  • Programmatic SEO: many pages built from one template and a spreadsheet of data.

Which term do you actually mean?

A quick way to pick the right word:

  • "Can software do this chore for me?" You mean SEO automation, sometimes called automated SEO.
  • "Can AI help with the thinking or the writing?" That's AI SEO.
  • "Can AI figure out the steps by itself?" That's agentic SEO, done by SEO agents.
  • "Can it keep running without me?" That's autonomous SEO.
  • "Can we make hundreds of pages from our data?" That's programmatic SEO.
  • "Are AI assistants recommending us?" That's GEO, AEO, and LLM visibility.

Most real setups mix several of these. A team might have fully automated reports, AI-drafted briefs, and a person writing and approving every page that goes live. That's normal, and usually sensible.
