Agentic SEO

You set the goal. The AI works out the steps.

Agentic SEO is SEO where an AI agent works out for itself which steps and tools it needs to reach a goal. You say what you want. It figures out how.

Here's the difference in practice. A normal workflow is a recipe: take a keyword, build a brief, write a draft. Same steps every time. An agent might instead check your Search Console data, notice a page that's been slipping, look at what ranks for that search today, draft an update, and then ask you to approve it before anything changes.

Core idea

Workflows follow procedures. Agents pursue goals.

That matters when the right next step depends on what the agent finds. Why did traffic drop? It could be a competitor, a technical problem, or an outdated page. A fixed workflow can only follow the branch it was built for. An agent can look, reason about it, and choose.

What an agent needs

A useful agent is more than a clever prompt. It needs:

  • A goal specific enough to aim at.
  • A model, the AI "brain" that plans the next move.
  • Memory of what it's tried and what you've told it to avoid.
  • Data, like Search Console, analytics, or a site crawler.
  • Tools it can use to get things done, like fetching search results or creating a draft.
  • Permissions that spell out what it may change and what it must never touch.
  • Feedback, so it learns from the results.

The full breakdown is in Anatomy of an SEO Agent.

A relatable example

Say you run content for an online shop with 300 buying guides. You give an agent one goal: "Find guides that are losing traffic and draft fixes."

On Monday it pulls the data and spots five guides that dropped. It sees that two now compete with newer comparison pages, so it drafts updated sections for those two. It flags the other three as probably seasonal. You review two drafts instead of digging through 300 pages.

Where humans stay involved

This is the part the hype skips. Letting an agent choose its steps is not the same as letting it publish whatever it likes.

Most teams should start low on the SEO Autonomy Dial: the agent recommends, or drafts, or acts only after a person says yes. Turn the dial up one task at a time, as it earns your trust.

Common mistakes

  • Vague goals. "Do SEO" keeps an agent busy without getting anywhere.
  • Too many permissions on day one. Start read-only, then draft-only.
  • Using an agent where a workflow would do. If the steps never change, a simple workflow is cheaper and more predictable.
  • SEO Agents are the individual AI systems. Agentic SEO is the approach of using them.
  • Autonomous SEO is about running continuously over weeks and months. An agent can do one task and stop.
