Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand and content mentioned, and ideally cited, in AI-generated answers, like the ones from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews.
Here's why it's suddenly on everyone's radar. A potential customer asks ChatGPT, "What's the best invoicing tool for freelancers?" They get a short answer naming three products. If yours isn't one of them, you're not even in the running, however well you rank on Google.
What's actually different
With classic SEO, success means ranking in the list of links. With GEO, success means:
- Being mentioned by name when someone asks a relevant question.
- Being cited, with a link back to your page as a source.
- Being described accurately, with the right features, pricing, and use cases.
These tools are called "generative engines" because they generate a fresh answer each time, rather than just listing existing pages.
What overlaps with regular SEO
Most of the basics still apply, which is good news:
- Clear entities. Make it obvious what your company and products are, what they do, and who they're for. An entity is just a clearly defined "thing", like a brand, product, or person, that search engines and AI models can recognise.
- Trustworthy sources. Mentions on reputable sites, reviews, and industry roundups help AI models "know" about you.
- Structured facts. Plain statements of features, prices, and comparisons are easier for a model to pick up than vague marketing copy.
- Direct answers. Pages that answer a question clearly in the first few lines are easier to quote.
What's new is the measurement
You can't check a ranking position for an AI answer. It changes with the wording of the question, the model, and even from one day to the next.
So GEO leans on LLM visibility tracking and AI citation monitoring: asking AI tools a set list of questions regularly, then recording who gets mentioned, who gets cited, and how you're described. That's exactly the kind of repetitive checking automation is good at.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as a separate magic trick. Most GEO gains come from clear, well-sourced content that's also good SEO.
- Checking once and calling it done. Answers shift constantly. Track trends, not one-off screenshots.
- Ignoring accuracy. Being mentioned with the wrong price, or a feature you dropped last year, can do more harm than not being mentioned.
How it differs from AEO
Answer Engine Optimization is the broader idea of showing up wherever search gives a direct answer, including the classic featured snippet box on Google. GEO focuses specifically on answers written by AI models.
