Automate Internal Linking

Get suggestions for linking related pages on your site, and approve them in batches.

Internal links are links from one page on your site to another. Automating them means software finds pages that should link to each other and suggests where to add the link. You approve the good ones.

The short version: Start with suggestions. Only let software add links on its own once you've set strict rules for how relevant a link must be.

You publish a new guide and it sits there with no links pointing to it, so search engines barely notice it. Somewhere in your 300 older posts there are a dozen perfect places to link to it, but finding them by hand means opening every page. Software can find them in seconds.

What internal linking involves

Internal linking means connecting related pages, choosing sensible link text (the clickable words), making sure important pages get plenty of links, and fixing pages that have none, often called orphan pages.

What software can take off your plate

  • Finding pages that mention a topic but don't link to the page about it
  • Suggesting the exact sentence and link text for each new link
  • Listing orphan pages with no internal links pointing at them
  • Checking for broken internal links after pages move
  • Adding links to a newly published page from related older ones

What to keep in human hands

  • Approving links, at least until the suggestions are reliably good
  • Deciding which pages matter most and deserve the most links
  • Keeping link text natural rather than stuffed with keywords

A simple first automation

A weekly link suggestion batch:

  1. When you publish a page, add its main topic to a sheet.
  2. A workflow searches your site for older pages that mention that topic.
  3. An AI step picks the best sentence on each page and suggests link text.
  4. Suggestions land in a sheet with an approve column.
  5. You approve a batch on Friday, and the approved links are added.

Common mistakes

  • Auto-inserting links without checking they make sense
  • Using the exact same keyword as link text every time
  • Adding so many links that pages become hard to read

Where it sits in the loop

Internal linking is part of Optimize, and it also helps Publish by making sure new pages get found quickly. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.

How much control to give it

Start on Recommend. Move to Execute with approval, and consider Execute reversible actions only if every link is logged and easy to remove. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
