Automate Schema Markup

Generate and check structured data so search engines understand your pages.

Schema markup is a bit of code on a page that tells search engines exactly what it is: a product, a recipe, an FAQ, an article. Automating it means generating that code from your page data and checking it's valid.

The short version: Template-driven schema is ideal for sites that build many pages from templates, and for sites run on a CMS.

An online store has 2,000 product pages and someone has been adding schema by hand, one page at a time, for months. Half the pages still have none, and some of the old ones show the wrong price. Generating it from the product database fixes both problems at once.

What schema markup involves

Schema work means choosing the right type for each kind of page, filling in accurate details (name, price, author, rating), adding it to the page, and checking it for errors with a validation tool.

What software can take off your plate

  • Generating schema from templates, so every page of a type gets it
  • Filling in details straight from your product or page data
  • Validating schema on every page after changes
  • Alerting you when schema errors appear in Search Console

What to keep in human hands

  • Choosing which schema types suit each page type
  • Checking that what the schema says matches what the page shows
  • Avoiding markup for things that aren't really on the page, like fake reviews

A simple first automation

Template schema for one page type:

  1. Pick one page type, such as blog articles or product pages.
  2. Write one schema template with placeholders for title, author, date, and so on.
  3. Your CMS or a script fills the placeholders from each page's data.
  4. A weekly check validates a sample of pages.
  5. Errors are sent to you with the page address.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up content that isn't visible on the page
  • Letting schema go stale when prices or details change
  • Expecting schema alone to boost rankings. It helps search engines understand, it isn't a shortcut.

Where it sits in the loop

Schema belongs in Optimize, with checks in Measure. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.

How much control to give it

Once a template has been reviewed, it can run on Fully autonomous for that page type. New templates start on Draft. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
