Technical SEO is making sure search engines can find, read, and store your pages. Automating it mostly means monitoring: software checks your site regularly and tells you the moment something breaks.
The short version: Automate detection as much as you like. Automate fixes that could break things very carefully.
A developer ships an update on Thursday that accidentally tells search engines not to index your blog. By the time anyone notices, weeks later, traffic has fallen off a cliff. A daily check would have caught it on Friday morning.
What technical SEO involves
Technical SEO covers crawling (search engines visiting your pages), indexing (search engines storing them so they can appear in results), page speed, broken links and pages, redirects, and site structure.
What software can take off your plate
- Crawling your site weekly and comparing it with last week
- Alerting you when important pages return errors or get marked "noindex"
- Checking Search Console for new indexing problems
- Tracking page speed on key templates
- Opening a ticket for developers with the problem and affected pages
What to keep in human hands
- Redirects, deleting pages, and changes to site structure
- Changes to robots.txt (the file that tells search engines what to skip)
- Deciding which issues are actually worth a developer's time
A simple first automation
A daily "did anything break?" check:
- List your 20 most important pages in a sheet.
- Every morning, a workflow loads each one and checks it responds normally.
- It also checks the page isn't blocked from search engines.
- If anything fails, it sends an alert with the page and the problem.
- Once a week, it summarizes new issues from Search Console.
Common mistakes
- Letting automation make bulk redirects or delete pages
- Alerting on every minor warning, so real problems get lost
- Finding issues but never getting them into a developer's queue
Where it sits in the loop
Technical SEO is mostly Measure and Discover. It watches the site's health and surfaces problems to fix. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.
How much control to give it
Detection and alerts can be fully automated. Fixes should be Recommend or Execute with approval, and destructive changes should stay with people. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
