n8n is a workflow automation tool: you connect apps and steps as boxes on a canvas, and it runs them for you. It isn't an SEO tool itself, but it's one of the most popular ways to build custom SEO automation, and you can host it yourself.

Say every Monday you copy Search Console numbers into a sheet, compare them with last week, and message your team about anything that dropped. n8n can do all three steps on a schedule while you get on with your week.

Who it suits

It suits people who are comfortable with a bit of technical setup and want control: freelancers, in-house SEOs, and agencies building repeatable systems. You don't need to code. But if you've never used an API (a way for two pieces of software to talk to each other), expect a learning curve.

  • People building their own SEO automation from scratch

An example: using n8n for SEO automation

A Monday decay alert. A schedule trigger fires at 8am. A step calls the Search Console API for clicks per page over the last 28 days and the 28 before. A filter keeps pages that lost more than 20%. An optional AI step summarises likely causes, and a final step posts the list to Slack. Later, you can add a step that creates a task for each page in your project tool.

Where it sits on the automation ladder

Level 2–5. It's a blank canvas, so it can sit anywhere from a simple scheduled report to a full AI agent. The level depends entirely on what you build.

Our five levels of SEO automation run from single tasks, like a weekly report, up to systems that run the whole loop on their own.

What it does well

  • Very flexible: it can connect to almost anything with an API
  • You can host it on your own server
  • Good at chaining lots of API calls together

Limitations and watch-outs

  • You design all the SEO logic yourself

n8n doesn't know anything about SEO. You design the logic, handle errors, and keep it running. Self-hosting can save money, but then updates and uptime are your job. If you plan to use it commercially at scale, read the licence terms first.
