You can build an SEO agent in n8n by using its AI Agent node as the brain and connecting other workflows as tools it's allowed to call. n8n handles the plumbing, like schedules, logins, and logs, while the AI model decides which tool to use next.
Priya, the only SEO person at a 40-person software company, wanted something that could answer “why did this page drop?” without her opening five browser tabs. A small n8n agent with two tools got her most of the way there in a day.
Is this for you?
- You already use n8n for fixed workflows.
- You want to try agents without writing a full application.
- You like being able to see every step the agent took on a visual canvas.
What you need before you start
- n8n with its AI agent features available.
- An account with an AI model provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google.
- Small sub-workflows that each do one job. These become the agent's tools.
- A chat trigger or simple form, so you can ask it questions while testing.
Your first build: a “why did this page drop?” assistant
Two tools and a clear set of instructions are enough for a genuinely useful helper.
- Build a sub-workflow that takes a page URL and returns its Search Console clicks and top queries for two periods.
- Build another that fetches the live page and pulls out its headings and length.
- Add an AI Agent node and connect both sub-workflows as tools, each with a clear description.
- Write instructions: compare the periods, name the queries that fell, and suggest likely causes, clearly labelled as guesses.
- Add simple memory so it remembers which page you're talking about during a chat.
- Test it on pages where you already know what happened.
Tool descriptions matter more than you'd think. The agent chooses tools by reading them, so “Returns Search Console clicks for one URL over two date ranges” works far better than “GSC tool.”
Mistakes to avoid
- Cap the number of steps so a confused agent can't loop and run up your bill.
- Keep every tool read-only until you've watched it work for a while.
- Read a few execution logs each week to see how it's actually reasoning.
- Stick to one model version where you can, so its behaviour doesn't shift under you.
