An SEO automation stack is the set of tools that work together to run your automations. Almost every setup, however simple, ends up with the same six layers: data, workflows, intelligence, publishing, measurement, and safety.
Knowing the layers helps when you're shopping for tools. Instead of asking "which AI SEO tool is best?", you can ask "which layer am I missing?"
The six layers
1. Data
Where your information comes from.
- Google Search Console, for clicks, impressions and rankings. It's free and usually the most useful source.
- Analytics, for what visitors do after they arrive
- Keyword and search result tools, often through an API (a way for software to talk to other software), like DataForSEO
- A crawler like Screaming Frog, which scans your site the way a search engine does
2. Orchestration
The glue that connects everything and runs it on a schedule. "Orchestration" just means coordinating the steps.
3. Intelligence
The part that reads, sorts, scores and writes.
- AI models (LLMs) for summarizing, drafting and classifying
- Simple scoring formulas, like "clicks lost times business value"
- Classifiers that sort keywords or pages into groups
4. Execution
Where the work actually lands.
- Your CMS, the system you publish pages with, through its API. See the WordPress API guide.
- Git-based publishing, for sites built from code
- Ticketing tools, for work that a developer or writer should pick up
5. Measurement
How you know it helped: rankings, traffic, sign-ups or sales, and AI visibility (how often AI assistants mention or cite you).
6. Governance
The safety layer. It's easy to skip and painful to miss.
- Permissions: what each automation is allowed to change
- Review steps before anything risky goes live
- Logs of every action
- A way to roll back, meaning undo a change
A small starter stack
Say you're a one-person SEO team. A perfectly good first stack could be:
- Search Console for data
- n8n or Make to run a weekly workflow
- An AI step to summarize what changed
- A Google Sheet or Slack message as the output
- The same Search Console data to measure results
- You, reading the summary before acting, as the governance layer
That's all six layers, with no custom code.
Common mistakes
- Buying intelligence before data. A smart AI step can't fix missing or messy data.
- Forgetting governance until something goes wrong
- Too many tools. Each one is another login, bill, and thing that can break.
